Tour highlights of the legendary Rhine River, then discover Nordic wonders by sea. Experience cultured Basel before setting sail for Germany’s storied Black Forest and France’s multicultural Strasbourg. Visit Heidelberg Castle, Germany’s most famous schloss, and Rüdesheim’s inviting Drosselgasse. Admire Cologne’s famous cathedral, and tour Marksburg Castle. In Kinderdijk and Amsterdam, explore Holland’s famous windmills and waterworks. Then, sail the North Sea to the seaside village of Skagen, Denmark. Set off for Norway’s dramatic fjord landscapes, journeying from vibrant Oslo and history-rich Kristiansand to cosmopolitan Stavanger and spectacularly scenic Flåm. Disembark in historic Bergen, a city with deep Viking roots.

Welcome to Basel, on the Rhine River in northwest Switzerland. Transfer from the airport to your ship.* After boarding, enjoy time on your own getting acquainted with the city. Dinner is served on board.

Sunday, 7/1/2018 - Breisach, Germany
Arrive in Breisach this morning, gateway to the Black Forest. Take a scenic excursion through the area’s renowned mountain landscape, rolling meadows and dense forests. Once there, visit a local workshop to see a cuckoo clock-making demonstration, and learn how Black Forest Cake is made. Return to your ship for lunch. This afternoon, perhaps join an optional excursion to the quaint Alsatian town of Colmar to discover the storybook charm of its streets lined with medieval, Gothic and Renaissance buildings, and visit a fine arts museum. Alternately, choose an optional excursion that explores Colmar’s World War II history. Dine on board this evening and cruise on through the night.

Monday, 7/2/2018 - Strasbourg, Germany
Disembark this morning for your guided tour of Strasbourg. See the European Parliament and tour the interior of the city’s famed cathedral. Free time allows you to further explore this Alsatian city’s blend of French and German cultures, resplendent churches, medieval covered bridges, verdant parks and handsome Art Nouveau and modernist architecture. Alternately, join our optional excursion into Alsatian wine country for an informative winery tour and tasting. Or, spend your full day exploring culinary Strasbourg on an optional excursion; as you explore the city and take in its sights, you will savor samples of the renowned Alsatian cuisine, from regional dessert specialties and meats to wine pairings with local foods. Return to your ship for dinner and departure.

Tuesday, 7/3/2018 - Heidelberg, Germany
After breakfast, disembark for a tour of Heidelberg, the home of Germany’s oldest university, founded in 1386. Visit the beautiful sandstone ruins of imposing Heidelberg Castle and take in the scenery of the Neckar River Valley and the city’s many red rooftops from this hilltop post. Afterward, set on a walking tour through Old Town to Heidelberg’s renowned gates. Return to your ship for lunch and afternoon cruising. Arrive in Rüdesheim in the early evening, then spend free time in the pedestrian-only Drosselgasse and sample a glass of locally produced wine at one of the restaurants or wine bars. Dine on board your ship or spend more time exploring in town if you prefer. You may also choose to experience one of our optional dinners on shore tonight. We remain docked overnight.

Wednesday, 7/4/2018 - Koblenz, Germany
This morning, sail along the most scenic stretch of the Rhine, where turreted castles and fortresses overlook the river from their hilltop posts. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this part of the Middle Rhine Valley is so beautiful. Arrive in Koblenz this afternoon and disembark for a tour of 700-year-old Marksburg Castle. You may also join an optional excursion that offers a lively and informative tour of Ehrenbreitstein Fortress; or, choose to journey into Moselle wine country on an optional excursion, stopping for a tour and tasting at a local winery. Return to your ship for lunch. Later, enjoy some time in this charming town at the confluence of the Moselle and Rhine Rivers.

Thursday, 7/5/2018 - Cologne, Germany
You have a morning tour of Cologne, including a visit to the Dom, Germany’s largest cathedral and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After your tour, spend the rest of the day and evening exploring Cologne on your own: Roman ruins, interesting neighborhoods and museums like the Fragrance Museum and the Chocolate Museum. As always, your Program Director can help you plan your free time. Or, join an optional excursion on which you will ascend to the Dom’s roof, enjoying up-close views of the cathedral’s architecture and bird’s-eye vistas of Cologne. Lunch and dinner are served on board; we depart at midnight.

Friday, 7/6/2018 - Kinderdijk, The Netherlands
We sail along the Rhine during the morning hours. Admire scenic views and enjoy a morning of enjoyable Dutch diversions: sample Dutch cheeses and jenever, a distilled juniper liquor, and take in a culturally enriching presentation on the Dutch Golden Age. This afternoon, your ship arrives in Kinderdijk, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Disembark for an afternoon tour of this ingenious network of windmills and other flood management devices. You learn why the windmills were built and see how they work, plus you enter a working windmill for a tour of its mechanisms and living quarters. Board your ship for departure and dinner. Arrive in Amsterdam around midnight.

Saturday, 7/7/2018 - Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Amsterdam, city of charming canals and elegant, gabled houses, and Dutch painting masters is a delight to explore. This elegant city was born from the Dutch Golden Age, when merchants fed their coffers from the Indonesian spice trade and commissioned great works of art. Today, you will depart your river ship and transfer to Viking Sun to continue your Viking Voyage by ocean. Embark your ship, settle in and explore.

Sunday, 7/8/2018 - Cruise the North Sea
Cruise the North Sea today. Vikings sailed these waters to establish colonies on Scottish islands, coastal France and beyond. In medieval days, the North Sea became a busy thoroughfare for trade as goods were exchanged between Scandinavia and the Mediterranean, with the powerful Hanseatic League controlling much of the traffic. As you sail, you might find your inner calm with yoga on the Sports Deck. Lounge by the Main Pool with its retractable roof and enjoy a cocktail at the Aquavit Bar.

Monday, 7/9/2018 - Skagen, Denmark
Discover one of the Baltic’s most romantic ports today when you visit Skagen at the northernmost point of Denmark’s peninsular mainland, Jutland. This charming old fishing village, nestled amid pristine dunes, picturesque moors and long sand beaches, prospered on the herring trade in its early days. The small town, inspiration to generations of artists, is best explored on foot, so you will accompany a local guide past colorful wooden houses on the waterfront and admire traditional fishing boats in the harbor. During a visit to the Coastal Museum, sample some herring and a glass of aquavit.

Discover the cultural riches of Norway’s sophisticated capital today. Oslo enjoys a stunning setting at the northern tip of the Oslofjord and boasts a rich history and cosmopolitan flair. See the once-mighty fortress of Akershus, the splendid Royal Palace and more before enjoying a leisurely stroll through the city’s famous Vigeland Park, a breathtaking collection of 212 stone and bronze sculptures that depict the cycle of human life.

Call on Kristiansand today, a charming small city near the tip of Sørlandet, Norway’s southland. Its strategic location on the Skagerrak strait long made it both a military stronghold and the royal residence of Harald Fairhair, the first King of Norway. Discover this remarkable city during a panoramic drive, featuring the impressive 17th-century Christiansholm Fortress, the fish market at Fiskebrygga wharf, the Old Town with its picturesque wooden houses and the splendid neo-Gothic cathedral. Alternately, you can visit its fascinating Kristiansand Cannon Museum, a remarkable collection of coastal artillery.

Thursday, 7/12/2018 - Stavanger, Norway
From the heart of the Old Town, where your ship berths, you will have the morning and early afternoon to explore. Start here in the old quarter, Gamle Stavanger, which has Europe’s highest concentration of wooden buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. Or consider a cruise along the Lysefjord to see the famous Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock, jutting out nearly 2,000 feet above—it is one of Norway’s most famous natural attractions. Offshore oil drilling is an important industry for the local economy, and the award-winning Norwegian Petroleum Museum tells the story of the dangers faced in extracting this precious fuel. While ashore, don’t forget to indulge in waffles with cream and sweet jams with a steaming cup of hot tea.

Through breathtaking fjords, your ship glides into the village of Flåm. Spend the day soaking up majestic views—from Vassbygda Lake to picturesque Vassbygdi and Aurland. Board the famous Flåm Railway for a train ride that climbs nearly 3,000 feet. Stop at the Kjosfossen waterfall and continue to the Mølstertunet open air museum, in Voss. Lunch on the famed Hotel Stalheim’s veranda, and gaze at the Naerøyfjord, a UNESCO Site.
